Emeritus Professor Adrian Bowman, one of the key contributors to the development of GWSDAT and its statistical tools, sadly passed away unexpectedly on 7th July 2026.
A member of staff at the University of Glasgow from 1986 to 2020, Adrian was an internationally renowned statistician whose pioneering work made lasting contributions to nonparametric smoothing, generalized additive models, statistical graphics, and computational statistics. His expertise and insight played an important role in shaping GWSDAT.
Adrian’s influence on GWSDAT extended beyond statistical guidance. The earliest versions of the software were made possible through his development of the rpanel package, which provided the interactive graphical user interface framework on which the first releases of GWSDAT were built.
The developers of GWSDAT will greatly miss Adrian and remain deeply grateful for his contributions.
